Elements & Qualities
In your horoscope chart, there is a way to group the planets which show their Qualities (or Nature). There are three “Elements” which are known as Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable signs. Each of them consists of four signs of the Zodiac and we will discuss the four Mutable signs Sagittarius, Virgo, Gemini, and Pisces here. The total number you have in each of these groups will give you an overall picture of yourself in terms of how self-oriented or stubborn or flexible you are.
Generally, you will find that
1- The more planets you have in Cardinal signs, the more you like to do things on your own and get things your way.
2- If you have many planets in Fixed signs, it shows that you like to control others and are stubborn.
3- Planets in Mutable signs indicate your degree of versatility and adaptability.
It is easy to understand how each planet in your horoscope affects you if you analyze it both in terms of its Triplicity and Quadruplicity. For example, Venus in a Water sign will always indicate a very sensitive nature whether it is in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. However, in terms of its Quadruplicity, Cancer is the most self-oriented (Cardinal), Scorpio the most loyal (Fixed) and Pisces the most changeable (Mutable).
How to Analyze Your Own Chart: First check if you have any planets under the Mutable column in your chart. This article applies not just to your Sun sign, but to any planet you might have in these four signs. The most important ones are the Sun which represents your basic nature; the Moon which is an indicator of your feelings; Mercury which shows how you think and communicate; and Venus which reflects your attitude towards love.
If the symbol of any of these planets is under the Mutable column, then check horizontally to the left and see which Triplicity it belongs to. If the planet is in the row of Fire, then read the Sagittarius section (and combine the meaning of the planet which is given later on in this article). If it is in Earth sign, then read the Virgo section, Gemini if it is an Air sign and Pisces if it is in Water.
In the example above, this person has seven planets in Mutable signs. Sun, Mercury, and Venus are in Water i.e. Pisces. Mars is in the Earth sign (Virgo) and Uranus in Air (Gemini) but it is not as important because it applies to everyone in that age group.
After carefully observing the behavior of these four signs, the ancients called them “Mutable”, which means changing, because the seasons always change when the Sun goes in front of these signs in March, June, September, and December. Having a planet in any of the mutable signs makes you versatile, adaptable, changeable, flexible and understanding in the area represented by the planet.
For example, if you have Mercury in any of these signs, then you will be versatile and adaptable in your thinking. Similarly, with Venus in a mutable sign, you will be adaptable but also changeable in art, music and love matters. In other words, you can live with different type of people, enjoy various art forms and appreciate many types of music e.g. modern, classical, jazz etc.
Planets in Mutable signs make people more flexible in their thinking and adaptable to changes. However, their adaptability can also make them too changeable. All these four signs thrive on changing circumstances and can usually cope with unstable environments quite easily. Depending on the planet involved, they do not experience the same degree of trauma as other signs because of their ability to understand the reasoning behind events.
