Elements and Qualities
One way that astrologers use to analyse your basic temperament is to look at how many planets you have in Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable signs. However, for those of you who are not in astrology, these labels may not mean much. So we decided to substitute them with plain English words which are self-explanatory. The new labels are: Self-oriented, Group-oriented and People-oriented.
Cardinal Signs: Self-oriented people have executive ability and like to get things their way. They always endeavour to have their own business and like to lead in their own way. They are good at starting new projects but expect others to finish them, and have a talent for delegating work to others.
Fixed Signs: Group-Oriented people are the ones who operate best in groups rather than on a one to one basis. They are very loyal to whatever cause they chose to defend and are very slow to adapt to new ideas and any changes, hence the term Fixed used in astrology to identify them. They like to stick with a project till they finish it before moving on to something else.
Mutable Signs: People-Oriented group is the most flexible and adaptable to changes. In fact, they are so versatile that they have problems sticking to any one project. They make excellent counsellors and therapists because of their natural ability to understand people.
Now there is another way to divide the 12 sgins into four groups which is based on the four original Elements i.e. Fire, Earth, Air and Water. For example, you can be a leader because of your intellect “I will win you to my side”, or you could overwhelm people because of your force of conviction “let us not argue, let us do it my way”
The ancients referred to this category by the four basic elements of nature: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. We will label these Passionate, Practical, Intellectual and Emotional.
The Passionate group (Fire) is distinguished by their force of conviction, high drive, sudden bursts of energy, and the need for action. They put their heart and soul into anything they do till the challenge is over.
Fire Signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius): This is a very passionate group and it is easy to see why they are natural orators and motivators. The key to their nature is their love of new challenges and the need to see results. (Most of the high speed police chases involve this group!). They not only love to break the law, they cannot resist bragging about it! They always exaggerate, but mostly to clarify a point rather than to distort it! This group is usually very extroverted.
Earth Signs (Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo) The Practical group is the most down-to-earth (Earth sign in astrology) and bound by duty and responsibilities. They form the basis of our society (life must be so boring for some people, especially those who are law abiding!), and carry on its tradition and culture. They are usually very hard working and keep on working till they achieve something in a tangible way.
Everyone should have at least one friend from this group because they are good survivors and are close to nature (like a farmer).
(Air Signs: Libra, Gemini and Aquarius): The Intellectual group (Air) is the most rational and objective (but not necessarily close to Truth!). They have the ability to stand back and look at a problem from a totally objective viewpoint. You can always appeal to their sense of humour. They have a need to understand everything and they respond to reasoning (Daddy, how do they make mirrors? Mummy, why is the sky blue?).
For writing business plans, you need the conceptual ability of this group, but to make the plan work, you will need the Practical ones!
(Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces): The Emotional group (Water) is very different from the passionate one and is usually quite introverted, regardless of what they project in public. They have deep emotions and are very sensitive to feelings. They respond to tears rather than reasoning.
Although they are the least objective, they are also the healers and will absorb other people’s problems without even realizing it. They have a lot of empathy and compassion but love to play games as well. They are the moodiest of the lot and you cannot use humour or anything to get them out of it. You have to use tears and become the underdog in their eyes to stimulate their need to save you, but even that takes a lot of time!
To understand yourself a little better, let us take each one of the twelve signs of the Zodiac and analyse them using the diagram on page 3.
Aries: You will notice that the nature of Aries is Passionate and their orientation is Self-oriented i.e. “me first”! They have leadership ability and convince others because of their confidence and strong convictions.
Taurus: Their nature is Practical and they work best in situations where they are not rushed (Fixed sign). They are very loyal to their ideas and neither accept new things readily get rid of their existing beliefs easily. If you have Venus in Taurus, you will be very loyal in love.
Gemini: They are Intellectual and People oriented. They are rational, objective and extremely flexible in their mind and seek change for the sake of change. However, they can also be too changeable because of their versatility.
Cancer: They are the Emotional types who can brood for days but will still get things their way because they are Self oriented! Their leadership involves creating obligations (after all that I have done for you...), but they are very caring and sensitive nonetheless.
Leo: This is another Passionate type which thrives in groups. They have strong leadership ability, but not of the selfish type. They do not adapt to changes fast enough and can become quite stubborn, It does not have to be their own company. They may be managers of large corporation rather than starting their own business.
Virgo: As you can see from the diagram on page 3, they are Practical and also very adaptable and flexible in their thinking. They make excellent therapists and counsellors because of their efficiency and practicality. Their talents show in teaching, understanding other peoples’ problems and finding the most realistic solutions.
Libra: They are the Intellectual type who will use their debating skills to win people to their side. They have true administrative skills and will reason with you and give you the benefit of doubt. They are successful because of their tactful and diplomatic nature.
Scorpio: This is one of the most difficult signs to understand because they are not only the Emotional type but are also very stubborn. They will hang on to love (Venus in Scorpio) even if it becomes a lost cause. However, they are also some of the best researchers because of their emotional tenacity.
Sagittarius: They are the Passionate type and have a very flexible and adaptable mind. They represent the true ideals of Dale Carnegie and other positive thinkers. They are the gifted preachers who can change their strategy quickly to adapt to changing circumstances.
Capricorn: This is another of the Practical types but with strong leadership ability. This is the one executive who proves his leadership by working hard and more than others. However, they can also be lonely eagles and often represent merely a cash register to their family.
Aquarius: This is another intellectual type who thrives on novel social concepts and ideas which benefit the mankind (or womankind!), but should never implement their own ideas! Being Fixed, they will listen to everyone, but you cannot change their mind.
Pisces: They are extremely healing and sensitive Emotional types who are very flexible and changeable, especially in their ideals! Casanova had Venus in Pisces and was very adaptable in music (he payed the violin) as well as in love!
How Does This Apply to You?
For now, just find your Sun sign in the diagram on page 3 and read both the meanings given for that column and row and top and left hand side. For example, if you are an Aries, then you are Self oriented, have leadership ability and are passionate. This article applies not just to your Sun sign, but to all the other planets at your birth. If you have Venus in Pisces, then you will be emotional, sensitive but also adaptable in love.
