Some time ago, we discussed the four Triplicities Fire, Earth, Air and Water which shows your temperament e.g. if Venus was in an Earth sign, you will seek stability and long term friendship in love, if it was in a Fire sign then love will be an adventure for you.
Now even though all Fire signs are similar in some respects and feel a cut above the rest and are daring and confident, how are they different from each other? Is one more adaptable than the other? Which one is more loyal? or which one cares for self first?
These are the type of questions that you can answer by dividing the 12 signs into three main categories of four signs each called Qualities or Quadruplicities (quad = four). These are the Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable signs.
One way that astrologers use to analyze your basic temperament is to look at how many planets you have in Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable signs. However, for those of you who are not in astrology, these labels may not mean much. So we decided to substitute them with plain English words which are self-explanatory. The new labels are: Self-oriented, Group-oriented and People-oriented.
Self-oriented people have executive ability and like to get things their way. They always endeavor to have their own business and like to lead in their own way. They are good at starting new projects but expect others to finish them, and have a talent for delegating work to others.
Group-Oriented people are the ones who operate best in groups rather than on a one to one basis. They are very loyal to whatever cause they chose to defend and are very slow to adapt to new ideas and any changes, hence the term Fixed used in astrology to identify them. They like to stick with a project till they finish it before moving on to something else.
People-Oriented group is the most flexible and adaptable to changes. In fact, they are so versatile that they have problems sticking to any one project. They make excellent counselors and therapists because of their natural ability to understand people.
You will notice from the table below that each Quadruplicity consists of four signs (you don’t have to remember the long name, just learn how to apply it in your own chart).
Basically, Cardinal signs like to get things their way and are first interested in self-preservation, which is a nicer way of saying that they can also be self-centred (or selfish in English!). Fixed signs are most stubborn but also loyal, and Mutable signs are adaptable but also changeable.
Each planet in your chart can be seen in this new light i.e. Mercury for communication or Venus for love matters. For example, if you have Venus in Scorpio (a fixed sign), then you are likely to be very loyal in love. But if you have Venus in Pisces, then you will be adaptable and versatile in all matters pertaining to art and love. Casanova was born with this Venus position and certainly could adapt to women of all ages, from different cultures and backgrounds! Of course, Pisces is also a Water sign (remember Triplicities?), which made him very sensitive to their needs as well.
Analyse Your Own Chart:

Just take a few moments to see the total number you have in each of these groups to get an overall picture of yourself. The more planets you have in Cardinal, the more you would like to get things your way.
If you have many planets in Fixed signs, you would like to control others but will have a fixed mode of behaviour. If you have many planets in Mutable signs, then you will be very adaptable and versatile but also quite changeable in life with too many interests.

Remember, this applies not just to your Sun sign but to every planet. You may be an fixed like a Taurus in one area, yet extremely versatile like a Gemini in another. As we analyse each sign, we will combine the meaning of the Triplicity as well to give you a full appreciation of the sign.

Notes on How to Use Quadruplicities
Focus on your Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus positions for now. Sun represents your basic drives and the most consistent part of your character. Moon indicates your emotional side and how you react to the immediate stimuli. For example, if you are a Leo, then you will always be dramatic. If you have Moon in Leo, then you will display your theatrical side when you are angry or just to make a point. Mercury shows how you communicate and Venus is an accurate indicator of your attitude towards love and all matters pertaining to your feelings.
